What Is IPL?
IPL stands for intense pulsed light therapy, an advanced noninvasive skin treatment that uses BroadBand Light™ to break down unwanted pigmentation in the skin for a more even complexion. If you struggle with the way you look because of sun damage, age spots, rosacea, acne, broken blood vessels, or other forms of hyperpigmentation, you might be an ideal candidate for IPL therapy at Ran Plastic Surgery. As an added benefit, IPL stimulates collagen production in the skin to produce long-lasting results. In time, you should notice a healthier, uniform skin tone with fewer dark spots. To find out if you might benefit from IPL therapy, contact our Los Angeles, CA office and schedule a private consultation with plastic surgeon Dr. Cong Ivy Ran.
How Does IPL Therapy Work?
At Ran Plastic Surgery, we perform IPL therapy using the Lumenis® M22™, an advanced BroadBand Light device that delivers powerful results for patients of all skin tones. Before starting your IPL treatment at our Los Angeles, CA office, a member of our team will wash and dry your skin before applying a topical numbing solution to ensure you're comfortable throughout your procedure. After that, Dr. Ran will pass the Lumenis handheld applicator over your skin as it emits high-energy pulses of light to break up pigmentation. The process usually takes 20 – 30 minutes and requires no significant downtime. Afterward, you may have some skin sensitivity for a few hours, and any brown or red spots on your skin may temporarily darken. Once these effects pass, you should notice a more even complexion.
What Are the Benefits of IPL?
IPL treatments have grown in popularity over the years as more and more individuals seek out noninvasive options for brightening and refreshing the skin. A few of the benefits of IPL therapy include:
- Neutralizes hyperpigmentation and age spots
- Rejuvenates the skin for a lasting glow
- Improves the tone and texture of rough skin
- Treatments are short and require little to no downtime for recovery
IPL Reviews
I had my rhinoplasty done by Dr. Ran Cong, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with both the results and the whole experience! Before the surgery, I had a rather bulbous tip and a low nasal bridge. My goal was to refine the nose wings, reduce the height of the columella and nasal bridge, and just make the overall shape look more delicate and balanced. Since it was quite a major procedure that required an implant, I consulted with three different surgeons before deciding to go with Dr. Ran — and I’m so glad I did.She not only has an impressive background and aesthetic sense, but also a very modern, in-depth understanding of facial structure and rhinoplasty techniques. During our consultation, she was patient, attentive, and genuinely cared about what I wanted. She walked me through every detail and made sure we were on the same page before surgery, which gave me so much confidence. Now I’m three months post-op, and my nose looks beautiful and natural — the shape is stable, no inflammation, no abnormal bleeding. The incision line is incredibly fine and almost invisible. I have oily, scar-prone skin, but the scar is barely noticeable, even at close range. She even included a laser treatment afterward, which helped a lot!Overall, I had such a wonderful experience and couldn’t thank Dr. Ran enough for giving me a nose I truly love. She says I still have some swelling to go down, but honestly, I already love my new nose! 💕

How do I prepare for my IPL treatment?
Before your IPL session, avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least two weeks. Refrain from using exfoliating or harsh skincare products, such as retinol or glycolic acid, for several days before your appointment. During your consultation, Dr. Ran will provide personalized instructions to ensure your skin is ready for treatment.
Is IPL treatment painful?
Most patients describe IPL treatment as feeling like a mild snapping sensation on the skin. To increase comfort, our team at Ran Plastic Surgery applies a topical numbing cream before starting the procedure. The process is designed to be as comfortable as possible, allowing you to relax during your session.
How can I extend my IPL results at home?
Protect your skin by applying sunscreen daily and avoiding excessive sun exposure, as UV rays can reverse the benefits of IPL. Use gentle, hydrating skincare products recommended by our team to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine in Los Angeles, CA, can help prolong your results.
